pH, Meet Perfume: What’s Going On Here?

Your skin has a natural pH level — typically between 4.5 and 6.2, which is slightly acidic. But here's the fun twist: your skin’s pH can actually change how a perfume smells once it hits your skin.

When you spray perfume, it interacts with:

• Your skin’s acidity
• Natural oils, sweat, and hydration levels
• Your body temperature
• Even your diet, hormones, stress, and the weather

All of these can alter how the top, heart, and base notes of a fragrance break down and evolve over time.

So what does your pH mean for your scent?

Acidic skin (lower pH) tends to intensify sharp notes like citrus or green tea. Scents may feel brighter but might fade more quickly.

Alkaline skin (higher pH) can mellow out fresh top notes, making them smell powdery or even metallic. Some scents may feel flat or overly soapy.

This is why the same fragrance can smell fresh and vibrant on your friend, but a bit “meh” on you. It's all about your body chemistry.

So, How Do I Know What Works for Me?

You don’t need a lab — just a little patience and curiosity.

1. Spray the scent on your wrist and let it sit for 15–30 minutes. No rubbing!
2. Smell the dry-down. Does it smell warmer, sweeter, sharper, or like it disappeared?
3. Compare it to fabric or paper. Spray the same scent on a cotton pad or shirt. If it smells very different, your skin chemistry is doing the work.

If your scent fades quickly, your skin might be on the alkaline side or very dry. Try:

• Fragrances with strong base notes (woods, musk, amber, resins)
• More concentrated formulas like Eau de Parfum or Extrait de Parfum
• Layering over unscented lotion to lock in scent
