How to Apply Cologne: Expert Tips for Men’s Fragrance

What if I told you the cologne you wear every day can last longer, blend better with your skin, and be experienced from a further distance?

You likely have tried a few different colognes and did not get the experience you expected.

Stop blaming the fragrance. It could be you. Yes, you heard it right. The way you apply fragrance affects its performance.

Do you know why your cologne does not perform up to your expectations?

First, you are applying it all wrong.

Second, you did not think about the concentration of oils in the perfume.

Third, and most importantly, you need to spray it on when your skin is moisturized.

So, you need to learn how to spray cologne correctly.

Stop worrying, we got you!

We've done all the testing and research, so you do not have to. We condensed all our learnings in this quick tip guide. Follow them and watch the performance peak.

Prepare Your Skin First

Your skin determines the fragrance’s impact on your body. So, before applying it, get ready with your skin.

  • Take a shower first. A hot shower is better. Reason? It opens pores in your skin, allowing it to absorb the scent better.
  • After the shower, apply moisturizer to prevent the skin from drying. It’s important because when the skin is moisturized, the scent diffusers within it properly.
  • Avoid spraying directly on your face or any other sensitive body parts. Instead, apply only one or two sprays to a non-sensitive area, such as the back of your hand.

Find Pulse Points

Pulse points are areas where blood stays warm. They are located on the neck, shoulders, wrist, chest, and elbows. If you apply fragrance to these areas, the scent can defuse more effectively.

Check the table below to learn where you can apply cologne.

  • Neck: Since your neck is warm, apply cologne on it - spritz on both sides.
  • Shoulders: Apply on shoulders because they are warm.
  • Wrists: Wrist is another warm part. Apply fragrance on both wrists for maximum impact.
  • Inner Elbow: Don’t skip elbows. Spray cologne on both inner elbows to ensure a refreshing aroma.
  • Chest: Since your chest temperature remains hot, apply fragrance for better results.

Avoid Excess Use

Less is more. So, use less cologne for better effects. Avoid overspraying 10+ times. Instead, start with one or two sprays instead.

Also, don’t apply directly on clothes and rub across your body.

  • If you use Eau De Cologne or Eau De Toilette, apply 3-5 sprays only.
  • In the case of Eau De Parfum, opt for 2-3 sprays. Not more than that.
  • Most importantly, keep the bottle 3 to 6 inches from the body while applying.

Go for a Unique Scent Combination

At times, choosing the best cologne for men that matches a special occasion is challenging.

In that case, opt for creating layers. Try different products from a similar fragrance collection.

For example,

Use the same type of body wash, scented lotion, deodorant and body cream that combines with your cologne.
